Abstract

The use of analgesic medications in self-medication among non-health science students is still found to be inappropriate. One factor suspected to influence this behavior is self-efficacy, which is an individual’s belief in their ability to make treatment decisions; however, its role has not been extensively studied. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy in self-medication and the appropriateness of analgesic medication use among non-health science students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed. Data were collected using a questionnaire validated for both validity and reliability, administered to students meeting the inclusion criteria. Analysis utilized the Spearman Rank test. Results indicated a significance value of 0.821 and a correlation coefficient of 0.019, indicating a very weak positive direction. This suggests that an increase in self-efficacy tends to be followed by an increase in the appropriate use of analgesic medications; however, this relationship is not statistically significant. It is concluded that self-efficacy is not significantly associated with the appropriate use of analgesic medications among non-health science students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
